ai files in gimp

Why not export figures from GIMP and insert them into your project inInkscape?

Then you can keep your vector graphics in Inkscape. On Tue, Dec 1, 2015 at 2:22 PM Alex Vergara Gil wrote:

It's not clear what you need to do. Do you need to insert figures intoyour AI file, or do you need to take some figures from the AI and usethem in your GIMP project?

Gimp should be able to import ai files since they are based on PDF(from illustrator 10). If it doesn't, try to rename your file.ai tofile.pdf and try again.

Note, however, that importing them into GIMP will result in therasterization of the vector shapes (turning them into bitmap images). If you want to keep them as vectors, GIMP is not the program you want. Also, if you want to keep the shapes separated from the background, rasterization could be a problem too.

I've used inkscape on the commandline (in Linux) to convert ai files topng in the past, and it's worked fairly well as long as I have theright fonts installed.

How were you converting the files to PNG? What problems did you have? Can you share a sample file?

(ignore if you've already solved it all!)

ai files in gimp

Dear Liam
Thats exactly my problem, fonts are not converted properly, even whenthe same font is installed in my system, it just puts the renderedtext without transparency overlapping the enclosure, also enclosuresare rendered wrongly (smaller than should be). It seems a conversionproblem, but I know going from vector to bitmap is notstraightforward. Thats the main reason why i wanted GIMP to handlevector layers, with a final preview and some control from users sideabout the final conversion.

Alex
