In October 2019 Apple released the newest version of macOS, called Catalina (10.15).Catalina removes support for 32-bit apps, and WINE (which we previously recommendedfor Mac users installing OnCall) is only available as a 32-bit app. Due to this policychange by Apple, we are no longer able to offer a WINE bundle for Mac users wishingto install OnCall. This page is available for historical purposes, or for Mac userson older OS version wishing to install using the old method. This process, and thedownloads offered on this page, are no longer supported.

The following is out of date unless you have not updated to macOSCatalina.

OnCall (Amion's desktop scheduler) is developed as a Windows app. Amion offers a specialinstaller to make it easy for Mac users to run OnCall with Wine.

Wine is a free and open-source compatibility layer that allows Windows-based applicationslike OnCall to run directly on your Mac. OnCall requires Wine to run on your Mac,and it must be installed first, before installing OnCall.

In almost every case, the Wine-based app won’t run in Catalina. The easiest solution is to install Windows in Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion and run the app in Windows. Is wine for Mac free? Catalina removes support for 32-bit apps, and WINE (which we previously recommended for Mac users installing OnCall) is only available as a 32-bit app. Due to this policy change by Apple, we are no longer able to offer a WINE bundle for Mac users wishing to install OnCall.

This process should work on any macOS version up to macOS Mojave (10.14, releasedSeptember 2018). Always check this page and our newspage before installing a new macOS version to ensure compatibility.

Step 1: Install XQuartz

XQuartz is a background service required by Wine. You can download it here:

Download and run the installer.

Step 2: Install Wine

On the Wine download page, click to download the Installer for 'Wine Stable'.

Download and run the installer.

We suggest enabling 64-bit support during install.

Step 3: Install OnCall

Does Wine Work On Catalina

Once it finishes downloading, run the installer. When it completes you will have anew OnCall Launcher icon on your Dock.

First run

You can open OnCall by clicking the OnCall Launcher icon on yourDock.OnCall Launcher opens both Wine and OnCall. (You'll see more thanone icon in your Dock while OnCall is running.)

The first time you open OnCall, Wine will perform some setup steps. (Subsequent launcheswill go much faster.)

• You may see a message indicating that 'Wine is not optimized for your Mac'.This is normal and you can hit OK to proceed. Amion and the Wine project are bothworking to support 64-bit in the future.
• During setup, Wine may suggest installing 'Wine Mono' and 'Wine Gecko'. Theseare optional and not required for OnCall. You can click Cancel to choose not to installthem if you wish.

You don't need to run this installer again to update OnCall. To update, just clickHelp > Update OnCall from the OnCall menu bar.

Open your existing schedule

Once OnCall launches you'll see a Welcome screen.

If you are opening a schedule that already exists on Amion, click Open anExisting Schedule. Enter your admin password in the box at the bottom, thenclick the Open from Amion button with the blue arrow in the lowerright hand corner.

If you're starting a schedule that hasn’t been on Amion before, click CreateA New Schedule to get started.

64-bit – Driven by need

With 64-bit only macOS Catalina around the corner and therefore the imminent loss of 32-bit, I had to sort out my toolchain where Wine is still playing a major role.
I therefore rebased my build-environment on macOS High Sierra and XCode 9.4.1. That is the last combination where I can compile both architectures of Wine in one run. As Clang 32-bit is already removed in macOS Mojave. I was able to install the command line tools of XCode 9.4.1 on it, but in the end, I opted for a clean solution. As the already heavy bending of environment variables to build self-contained versions of Wine got to an all-new level with multiple versions of XCode installed :).
But moving up to High Sierra has its price. The new builds will only run on machines with High Sierra or newer. (Let me know if you still need to run WineBottler on older versions of macOS, it might be possible to move one or two incarnations back. Possibly not as far as the now really outdated WineBottler 2.0 or WineBottler 1-8 did. They were still built on OS X 10.6.8 and had a spectacular range of OS versions supported :D).

16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit

Back to today: The new builds of Wine.app for WineBottler are based on Wine 4.0.1 and come as shared WoW64 builds. They feature the 32-bit and the 64-bit Wine. Even 16-bit programs still work with the current setup. Further, the builds do include Mono (which was already bi-arch) and both architectures of Gecko.

Compatibility

I did some groundlaying work to include 64-bit support into WineBottlers app-building, already: You can easily select the correct operating-system / architecture combination. But things need to get a little bit smarter still to manage the two possible versions of prefixes that are required. I still consider this build preliminary work. Id est I did not test the setup with macOS Catalina, yet. But I plan on moving all my 32-bit Windows-based programs to their 64-bit counterparts anyway, so I'm not concerned with 32-bit too much.

Fixes

Finally, we have landed some UI fixes, too. They remove glitches on macOS Mojave, especially in Darkmode. Further, we have addressed missing icons and problems when selecting the exe to be run.
