If you are someone who grew up in the ’90s through to the early 2000s you likely know of the Japanese pocket pet that took over the world, Tamagotchi.

Now, Star Wars fans get ready because there will soon be an R2-D2 Tamagotchi!

Tamagotchi

Tamagotchis are little electronic egg games that hatch a creature which the owner needs to keep alive. With more recent generations, users who have Tamagotshis can connect with others, which allows for some fun gameplay. The goal is to raise your Tamagotchi as it moves through life until it passes on of old age, however, not feeding your Tamagotchi and taking care of it will result in it passing away sooner.

Now, it seems that Tamagotchi is teaming up with Star Wars! On their Instagram, yesterday, on May 4, the company (@tamagotchi_us) posted:

STAY TUNED… AN OUT OF THIS WORLD TAMAGOTCHI EXPERIENCE IS ON THE HORIZON

See the link in bio.

If you go to the link in the bio of the account, the page just displays the Star Wars logo, but underneath, just as the Instagram post shows, it reads R2-D2 Tamagotchi.

If we take a look at the shape of the classic droid, its round look would be perfect for a Tamagotchi, so it seems that it is very likely that Star Wars fans will soon be able to purchase a pocked version of R2-D2!

If the entire Star Wars Tamagotchi experience is themed to the George Lucas franchise, it would be really exciting to see what changes could come. That being said, there has not been any confirmation on what this collaboration will look like or entail, so that information will be forthcoming.

Tamagotchi can also be played on your iPhone or Android device, so this collaboration may not be a physical change in the look of the Tamagotchi, but an online simulation.

According to the Star Wars website, RD-D2’s description is as follows:

A reliable and versatile astromech droid, R2-D2 has served Padmé Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, and Luke Skywalker in turn, showing great bravery in rescuing his masters and their friends from many perils. A skilled starship mechanic and fighter pilot’s assistant, he has an unlikely but enduring friendship with the fussy protocol droid C-3PO.

Considering Star Wars has done a number of collaborative franchise deals with R2-D2, this collaboration makes total sense!
