Adobe is powering the next generation of 3D and AR creatives with innovative new tools like Adobe Dimension, Adobe Aero, the Substance suite of products, as well as other 3D services. Focusing on these initiatives requires the full commitment of resources. And as a result, we’ve stopped the future development of Adobe Fuse (Beta), a 3D character creation software.

Fuse has been removed from Creative Cloud and is no longer available for download. We have tried to keep Fuse available as long as possible, but, unfortunately, it does not work with the newest Mac OS, Catalina (10.15), due to incompatible technology components.

3D characters remain an important aspect of many projects, and we plan to still have robust character workflows in the future. In conjunction, last year we refreshed Mixamo.com, our 3D character rigging, and animation web service. You’ll be able to find dozens of new ready-to-use 3D characters and a refreshed UI.

Adobe remains committed to 3D & AR initiatives, and we’re excited to continue this journey into the new generation of design.

How does the Fuse EOL impact uploading Fuse characters to Mixamo?

As part of Fuse being removed from Creative Cloud, the direct upload from Fuse to Mixamo will no longer function as of September 28th, 2020. You can continue to use Mixamo for Fuse characters via a manual export and upload process:

  • Export your character to .obj format
  • Combine the .obj, .mtl, and textures into a .zip file
  • Upload the .zip file directly on Mixamo.com

Uploading manually will allow you to continue to use the Mixamo auto-rigging services for your characters, but will not provide facial blendshape support or any unique Fuse rigging features

Adobe Fuse CC (formerly Fuse Character Creator) is a discontinued 3D computer graphics software developed by Mixamo that enables users to create 3D characters. Its main novelty is the ability to import and integrate user-generated content into the character creator.[1][2] Fuse was part of Mixamo's product suite and it is aimed at video game developers, video game modders, and 3D enthusiasts.[3]

History[edit]

Adobe

The technology underneath Fuse was initially developed as a character creator at Stanford University[4] from the work of Siddhartha Chaudhuri[5] in Prof. Vladlen Koltun's group. Chaudhuri's work resulted in a SIGGRAPH publication in 2011.[6] Mixamo also partnered with Allegorithmic in the creation of Fuse.[4] All texturing within Fuse is driven by Allegorithmic's Substance Designer.[7] A beta version of Fuse was originally launched on Steam in November 2013.[1] Fuse 1.0 was officially launched in March 2014.[8] Adobe has stopped development and discontinued support for Fuse on September 13, 2020.[9][10]

Fuse is a client based product that lets users choose and modify character components such as body parts in real-time.[11] Users can also customize their characters with clothing and texture options provided by Allegorithmic.[11] Fuse's main novelty is the ability for users to import and automatically integrate their own content into the character creation system, leveraging all the features of pre-loaded content.[1][2] Fuse characters are rigged through Mixamo online service. Characters have a bone driven rig and a blend shape based facial rig for facial animation.[7]

Use and availability[edit]

Fuse is used mostly by game developers and game modders. Fuse is available on Mixamo, on the Unity Asset Store and on Steam marketplace where it has a user base of 40,000 users as of September 2014. Fuse characters can be imported through a specific series of steps into games created with the Source SDK by Valve.
